From the field to the feed: what makes a useful grassroots mining story?

A practical invitation to geologists, operators, suppliers and local observers: bring one observation, its evidence and the question it raises.

LOCAL OBSERVATION → CHECKABLE EVIDENCE → DECLARE RELATIONSHIPS → ONE CLEAR TAKEAWAY

Start smaller than an industry forecast

A useful contribution can begin with one specific observation: a publicly announced project milestone, a piece of equipment explained, a training event or a question raised by a published technical document. Our proposed grassroots desk puts the contributor’s location, role and source beside that observation. You do not need to predict the next commodity cycle to explain something readers have overlooked.

Bring the evidence with the angle

Send the original public link, its date and the exact statement you want to examine. For an original field note, explain when and where the observation was made and what can be published. A photograph needs permission and an accurate caption. A private conversation does not become an attributable interview because someone remembers its general meaning. The desk will ask follow-up questions before presenting a submission as reporting.

Say what you know—and how

Identify whether you are describing your own work, interpreting a document or relaying another person’s claim. Keep those activities distinct. An operator may explain the question a machine is designed to solve; a geologist may explain what an announced result leaves unanswered. Neither contribution needs to pretend to represent the whole industry. Where specialist review is needed, we will say so rather than invent a verification badge.

Make relationships visible

Tell us if you work for the subject, own its securities, receive a fee, sell a related service or have another interest readers should understand. Company-supplied material can still be useful when its origin is visible. Paid placements need a clear advertising label. Editorial selection is a separate decision from buying marketing services. We do not describe an unreviewed pitch as an independent endorsement.

One observation, one minute

Our editing worksheet is simple: what happened, what is the evidence, why might a reader care, and what question remains? A short read should send readers to the original source and help them understand its limits. Longer interviews can support several focused clips when we have permission to use the footage and each cut preserves the speaker’s meaning.

Help build the desk

We are inviting pitches, not announcing a staffed correspondent network. Send a short sample and your relationship to the subject through the contributor page. Suggestions for towns, minerals, trades and overlooked questions are welcome. Publication follows review; submitting a story does not create a member account or guarantee acceptance. The ambition is a useful network built on identifiable people and checkable work.
